The Somes


Somes River is located in northwestern Romania, crosses a part of historic Transylvania County.
(Other names: Hungarian: Szamos, in German: Somesch or Samosch, Latin Samus

This is the fifth river as water flow and size in Romania.
It is formed by the union of Somesul Somesul Mic Mare (near the town Dej)

Somesul Mare (Greater) has its roots in the mountains of Rodna and through the department of Bistrita Nasaud.

Somes Mic (small) is formed by the confluence of "Somes Rece" (Cold) with "Somesul cald (Hot) and harvest its tributaries of the Apuseni Mountains (located in the Western Carpathians)
The Somes River crosses the plateau of Transylvania and empties into the Tisa River in the Hungarian territory


The main tributaries are: Somesul Mare Somesul Mic, and Almaşul Lăpuşul.
Major cities crossed: Sangeorz-Bai, Năsăud (Somesul Mare), Cluj (Somesul Mic), Dej, Satu Mare, and Jibou Ulmen.
The basin received: 15015 sq km
The exact length: 388 km
The mean flow: 120 m³ / s

Historically Somes has been a backbone of Transylvania County, the historic heart of the Romanian people. Raised by Latin as a wild and rushing river, Somes has been a source of inspiration for the Romanian folk song, and it is very often mentioned in classical literature and the traditional.
