The Wild boar

The wild boar (Sus scrofa), non-ruminant ungulate, the family Suidae, is a nomadic animal that moves a lot in search of food.

The weight of the male can reach 150 kg (or even more) to 90 cm tourniquet while laie rarely exceeds 100 kg.

The activity of wild boar is primarily nocturnal.

Food

His diet is omnivorous type: forest fruit (acorns, faines ...), various fruits (apples, grapes), roots, tubers, grains (maize and beans milk), earthworms and meat (of dead animals but also young fawns).

Reproduction

The rut takes place in late November early December. The old males looking then "companies" and engaged in heavy fighting for access to females and thus reproduction.

After 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days of gestation, laie gives birth to marcassins removed from red (from 4 to 10) in a nest of branches and grass called "pot". The marcassins be weaned around the age of 3 months. Then they lose their stripes and become "dumb redheads."

Distribution and staffing

His presence is mainly hardwood forests but is also found in the marshes. It is in fact now, or passage, in all the forests of Romania.

Purpose: the natural balance

Without predator, the wild boar is unchanged apart from the risks related to the weather, diseases and human activities. He did not really need artificial feeding that makes it prolific. In promoting its proliferation reflects a short-sighted policy, undoubtedly detrimental to the environment and agricultural production.

The presence of a boar that his groin ensures the introduction of the humus in the soil and destroyed a number of larvae, is beneficial to the forest. The scientist Roland M. Libois (Univ. de Liege) reports that in Poland, "any wild boar hunting is banned as soon as certain species of Lepidoptera are spreading. Threat that these parasites represent for the trees is then effectively squashed."

The forests can provide for the needs of the species, which then causes damage to trees and crops especially since neighboring boar was forced to leave its original area.
