Nicolae Tonitza

Nicolae Tonitza Born in Barlad in Rumania on April 13th, 1886 from 1902 he joins the national school of the beautiful arts of Iasi. It is in this age that he begins to painter the church of the village of Grozesti.

In 1908 he is allowed in the Royal Bavarian Academy of the Arts in Forming, in Munich but he arrests the studies to travel in France and Italy.

In Paris he frequents Pierre Laparde workshop studio, he wonders about the impressionism and the post impressionism, he likes making landscapes and life in the atmosphere of Montparnasse of time. It is the work of Daumier that attracts him particularly.

Nicolae Tonitza returns to Rumania in 1911 and finishes its studies interrupted at the school of Iasi or he obtains painter's diploma of Church. He is going to make the painting of the churches of Scorţeni, Silişte, Poeni, Valeni.

He expose his first ones canvases has Bucharest. (94 drawings with the painter Stefan Dimitrescu).
During the first world war he is mobilized and is arrested. After the war he stays in Bucharest or he paints and he also makes illustrations of books.

With other painters: Francisc Sirato, Oscar of and Stefan Dimitrescu he have an artistic movement known as the group four, by exposing under this name " the group four ".

He begins must to be more and more appreciated and to considered in the time as the most important painter of moment, also by exposing abroad (Brussels, Barcelona).

His works painted in quoted by Francis Sirato in the region of Dobrogea (realized in the years 1933-1934) stayed true leaders of work.

In 1939 he falls ill and goes out in 1940.
Famous for his portraits of children, a serene vision with impressive eyes Tonitza is one of the most personal painters of the Rumanian painting.
