George Lowendal - Painter (1897 - 1964)

1897, 10th of May – George Lowendal , son of Navy Officer, Baron Lorentius Lowendal, is born in Saint Petersburg, descendent of an the ancient Danish family among whose forefathers is the Danish-Norwegian King, Frederik the 3rd.

1914 -1917 – He attends, in the capital of the Russian Empire, the Fine Arts School and shortly after, the revolution lays a strong impact upon his fate: his father, in command of Kronstadt fortress is killed by the Bolsheviks and himself seeks refuge in the world of the imperial theater, and works first as an actor, then as a ballet dancer and as a stage director.

1918 – 1935 – He comes to Romania (Bucovina) and becomes a painter of sets and stage director at the Cernauti Theater, after which he settles in Bucharest. His First exhibition is held at the Romanian Writers’ House.

In 1936 – Leo van Puyvelde, general director of the Brussels Art Museums purchased one for the Modern Art Museum in Brussels. That same year, George Lowendal comes to Cernauti with a comprehensive exhibition of paintings.

1936 -1940 – He takes part in numerous exhibitions, both in and outside the country, organized by National Tourism Office, exhibiting mainly posters focusing upon the image of peasants from Bucovina.

1943 – He opens in Bucharest an exhibition of 80 paintings focusing exclusively upon Bucovina. Related themes, paintings he succeded to finish in only one month. The same year he is present in another exhibition in Venice.

1946 – 1950 – His contribution to official exhibitions is doubled by special initiative, unprecedented and unique, namely to exhibit in mine-galleries along with delivering explanatory lectures.

1950 – 1964 – He is a professor at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Fine Art Institute.
On the 18th of February 1964 – The painter George Lowendal dies in Bucharest.
