George Cosbuc
(1866 - 1918)

Born on September 20, 1866 in the Hordou village in north from Transylvania, (actualal judet of Bistrita-Young George Cosbuc - BUCOVINE.com Copyright © 2007Nasaud, on the valley of Salauta, tributary of the river Somesul Pond). Wire of the Sebastien priest, descendant of a family of the peasants and Maria, mother of 12 children.

George (Gheorghe) Cosbuc made her studies with Nasaud while taking part with enthusiasm as besides touts the children of this modest medium in the activity of a Company of reading which bore the name of "Virtus Romana Rediviva". This one recalled to people the fact that their language is of Latin origin and that they are the descendants of the Romans.

The biographers retain the fact that the George pupil had as colleague the father of Liviu Rebreanu, that which will become the large novelist of Transylvania.

In spite of the desire as of the her parents who dreamed for him a theological career, George Cosbuc, starts in Cluj of the studies in philosophy. Its tiller literary is quickly noticed, it publishes in the review "Musa somesana"

It starts has to attend the literary circles of the towns of Transylvania (also called Ardeal): Cluj, Sibiu, Brasov and publish its poems in review like "Tribuna" "Gazeta de Transylvania"

Between Cosbuc and the novelist Ioan Slavici, director of the magazine "Tribuna" was established a great friendship.

Its poem epic "Nunta Zamfirei" (the marriage of Zamfira) gains a very great success.
Its poem "We want grounds" becomes a leitmotiv of the poor.

In 1889 most prominent literary time criticizes invites it to come to Bucharest, to Romania, or Cosbuc will remain until death.

To Bucharest, George Cosbuc will start by earning her living like small cultural civil servant near the Ministry for the Worships, afterwards as a writer.

It expresses a great interest for the popular literature, it translated hundreds of the poems of the work of the large poets Greek (480 poems belonging to the 92 authors Greek) as well as Enéide or the work of Virgil.

George Cosbuc is the author of the translation of "Divina Comedy" of Dante Alighieri, in Rumanian.

Interested by the Sanskrit it translates the texts crowned of Rig Veda, Mahabbharata, Ramayana like Sakuntala de Calidasa.

Cosbuc is the translator of Rumanian Schiller.
Its literary activity, the collections of poems published, the price of Academy that it received, its articles and its work of writer one makes of him the man of the moment, always with the one, discussed sometimes, but always loved by the public.

Its volumes "Fire of wrong" (1896), "Strolls if idile", "Cantice of vitejie" (Songs for the brave men) 1904 will be published in many Re-editions.

It returns sometimes to Transylvania (at the time, it was like a voyage abroad) to re-examine the village of its birth and the district of Nasaud which it particularly held with heart.

In 1915 his/her only son Alexandru, (at the age of 20ans) is made kill in an accident of car.

This tragedy curtails the life of the poet.

During the First World War it will remain in Bucharest, even after the occupation of Bucharest by the German troops of the Mackensen General. The personal pains mixed with the pains of the people and the sufferings of the war, blacken the days of the poet, who ages abruptly.

Cosbuc dies on May 9, 1918 in Bucharest, in its modest apartment of Bucharest (Calea Plevnei, 48) little before the moment of the National Union of the Romanians, which took place on December 1, 1918, of which it dreamed all its life, particularly the last years has Bucharest, far from his native Transylvania.

Its village native, Hordou, bear today its name and the small house of the priest Sebastien Cosbuc, shelters a memorial of the poet called "the poet of the peasants".
