Theodor Aman - BUCOVINE.comTheodor Aman -La Gitane 1884 - BUCOVINE.comTheodor Aman (1831 - 1891) was one of the great masters of the 19 th century Romanian art. Born in Campulung Muscel, son of a Macedonian father and a Greek mother he began his studies in the city of Craiova.

He studied in Bucharest after he left for Paris (1850) to continue his studies with Michel Drolling and Francois Picot. His works youth were influenced by the spirit of the Italian Renaissance and painted in an academic style.

On his return to Romania he painted landscapes and scenes from the life of peasants, inspired by his hometown Campulung Muscel, (Arges.)

Founder of the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest and Iasi. Since 1963 he became director of the National Council of Fine Arts in Romania.

His paintings are inspired by the essential moments in the history of Romania, particularly in the Middle Ages. His paintings in which Vlad Tepes the Impaler or Stephen the Great are painted are still in the Romanian heritage.

He painted portraits, genre scenes, still lifes, landscapes, self portraits, paintings and historical scenes of war, he was alsoTheodor Aman - BUCOVINE.com interested in architecture, music, printmaking, literature. As a painter, he took part in the siege of Sevastopol and the Battle of Alma.

Regarded as the last "classical artist" in the Romanian painting, Theodor Aman was fascinated by impressionnisme french.

The Museum of Bucharest Aman (C Street. A. Rosetti) is housed in his house. Aman has not only designed the architecture, but also the furniture is carved by himself.

He painted the mural in the main hall and created the decorations inside and outside the house is built in neo-classical, with a frieze, medallions bearing the likeness of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Ange, niches and statues.
