Vasile Alecsandri - BUCOVINE.com
Born on July 21, 1821 in Bacau, in the principality of Moldavie (now, territory of Romania). Died on August 22, 1890, has Mircesti in Romania.

The poet was, indeed, the first truly European Rumanian writer who adhered to the European spirit of the time, the intellectual movement of the occident without to have neglected the Rumanian spirit, the traditions and the habits.

The writer had an important role in the creation and the evolution of the modern Rumanian State.
Citizen and patriot, it was militant of foreground in the revolution of 1848 and during the union of the Rumanian principalities (1859).

1828-1834 it makes its first studies with Iasi with the boarding school “François Cuénim” with Mihail

He becomes the secretary of the revolutionary committee of Cernauti. He leaves Bucovine for Paris in order to gain the leaders of the political life and French public opinion to support the cause of the Union of the Rumanian principalities by conducting a campaign in the Parisian press.

1849 Of Paris, it starts to collaborate in the review “Bucovina” of Cernauti or it publishes original poetries, popular poetries and the test “the Rumanian ones and their poetry”.

It is, in Paris in contact permanant with the exiled Rumanian revolutionists, particularly with Nicolae Balcescu, recently arrived to France after having escaped with the Austrians at the time of the failure of the Revolution in Transylvania.

1852 its first comedy Dame Kiritza in province has a great success.

1853 Alecsandri publishes in Paris its first volume of worms: Doinas and Brins of lily of the valley. Travel to Toulouse, Marseilles, Gibraltar, Tangier, Tétouan, Seville, Grenade, Madrid, it returns to Paris in diligence with ¨Prosper Merimé with which it binds a true friendship.

It sets out again on a journey for London then in Belgium and Germany.

1859 Alecsandri is named Foreign Minister of Valachia.
It directs the Rumanian diplomatic Agency of Paris (until May 1862).

In 1863 it accomplished at Napoleon III a diplomatic mission entrusted by prince Cuza. Alecsandri return visit to Napoleon III and to the Foreign Minister (Thouvenel).

In Italy it meets King Victor-Emmanuel.

Its diplomatic activity is very intense, it often goes to Cernauti, its place of heart or it is celebrated as writer.

In 1867 it leaves for Paris and meets his friend Al.Cuza, the former reigning prince of Romania, dethroned in February 1866 and visits the World Fair.

The same year is named member of the Academic Company which will become the Rumanian Academy thereafter.

It is divided between Paris and Moldavie, it often returns in Cernauti it writes and publishes the majority as of its dramatic and political works.

After the war of 1877 one proposes to him an extraordinary diplomatic mission in Berlin, then the post of Minister of Romania in Rome, but it refuses.

Its poetry “the Song of the Latin gente” obtains the first price with the contest of poetry of Montpellier.


In 1885 it is named minister of Romania in France.

In 1887 it receives the French academic Palms.

In 1899 stay with Mircesti, its field of Moldavie.

In 1890 Alecsandri, very sick refuses to be elected president of the Rumanian academy and dies on August 22 in Romania.
