Bistrita


Bistrita, 88 000 inhabitants. The city is located in the Bistrita Valley, with foot of the Mountains Borgo Bargau).
Capital of the department of Bistrita - Nasaud since 1968.

Archaeological excavations revealed the existence of some dwellings prehistoric, but Bistrita is

It was officially mentioned like "a city" in 1264. Towards XIII century end the saving in Bistrita develops, but is often damaged by the wars.


In 1242, Tatars, on their way in Central Europe, devastated the city and environments. Following the disorders, the inhabitants set up walls of defence: Bistrita becomes a fortress.

In 1465 the city had already 18 turns and bastions of defence set up by tradesmen of the city, organized in guilds.

Since 1353, Bistrita obtains the right to have 15 days an annual market and right to have of a blazon (ecu armorial): that represents one ostrich which has a crown on the head and carries a horseshoe gilded in its nozzle.

During the Average Age, thanks to Saxon very active in the craft industry, Bistrita becomes one of the most important cities and rich person of Transylvania.

Historic building


The Gothic Cathedral (with its tower of 75 meters) dominates the city.
Construction started in 1470 and has lasted almost 100 years:

- The XIII century old Church.

- Gothic arcades of the Central Place of the City known under names of "Sugalete", space of shops since the Average Age.

- the house of the Master of silver goldsmitheries "Put Argintarului"

- Vestiges of the old fortress and the Tower of the wet coopers


- the statue of Andrei Muresanu, revolutionary Rumanian poet, personality Revolution of 1848 in Transylvania, author of the words of the national anthem of current Romania. (The statue is place in Place Central of the City, close to the Town hall of the city).
- The statue of the poet George Cosbuc is in the Large Park of the City.

- the Rumanian writer Liviu Rebreanu (novelist traditional of Rumanian literature, author of the books of reference "Ion", "the Revolt "," Ciuleandra "," the forest of hung "," Adam and Eve "were particularly related to the spirit of the city. Today there is one college which bears its name and a statue out of bronze.
