The Cantacuzino Palace

The Cantacuzino Palace is located on one of the oldest streets of Bucharest, Calea Victoriei.
The Cantacuzino Palace
It was the residence of Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, one of the richest Romanians end of the nineteenth century, nicknamed "The Tycoon."

Built between 1898-1900, the palace was built on the plans of the architect I. D. Berindei in a Baroque style.

The entrance to the palace is guarded by two stone lions that are placed at the base of the canopy in the shape of a shell. The building has a penny high ground, the windows the ground floor are vaults, on the floor there are doors and wrought iron parapets are square. The facade has many skylights.

Within there are paintings by artists of the time Nicolae Vermont G. Demetrescu Mirea, Costin Petrescu.

The sculptures are signed by Oscar Spathe (small shepherd with the flute) and bronze Emil W. Becker.

After 1903 the palace was the residence of the family Cantacuzino, at the time of the First World War, the building has housed the Romanian Government.

Gh. Grigore Cantacuzino leaves his death, the palace as a legacy to his son Mihai. Who in turn decide in 1929 leaves the palace to his wife Maruca Cantacuzino (born Tescanu Rosetti).
They will marry later composer George Enescu.

During the Stalin era palace became the property of the Romanian state and from 1955 became the headquarters of the Union of Romania composer. In 1956 was founded on George Enescu Museum.
